Weekly Challenge #10

This week’s pattern was my first accidental variation while following a pattern.  Accidents can be very pretty things. You are getting one of my patterns this week for a couple of reasons. One is that I have company in town (my awesome Mum-in-law and my Aussie grandmother, who is currently visiting the states) – so I’m a bit pressed for tatting time. Secondly, today is a day that I remember my forever 13 brother – I love and miss him lots. So hearts for everyone. Family is wonderful and I do hope that everyone is able to take some time to enjoy their family and friends.

Source for the pattern I was following – “Priscilla Yoke Ear Rings” provided by Elain Gan on her blog: http://tattingpatterns.blogspot.com/2012/03/priscilla-yoke-earrings.html You should check out the other patterns she has on her blog as well!

The pattern for the original medallion can be found in Priscilla Yoke Book by Georgette Batt (for a pdf copy visit: http://www.antiquepatternlibrary.org). It is located on pages 32 and 33.

Weekly Challenge #8 – Tatted Cameo Pendant

This week’s pattern was designed by the talented TotusMel. She has a great designer eye and it is a delight to follow her work.

Pattern: http://totusmel.blogspot.com/2010/03/free-tatted-cameo-pattern.html

I don’t feel that I quite did her pattern justice.  It is so pretty.  I think I need some more practice with such a large ring (80 ds). It was nice learning how to make Victorian sets. I look forward to trying some of her other patterns in the future! This is definitely a pattern I will do again once I’ve had a bit more practice with Victorian sets. I had started out with size 20 thread, but I couldn’t get my ring to close. So I switched to size three thread and that made closing the ring easier.

Weekly Challenge #7 – Wedding Garter

“Something old,
Something new,
Something borrowed,
Something blue.”

This week’s pattern is provided by Gina Butler. Gina was sweet enough to find an updated version of her pattern for us to use… and if that isn’t awesome enough, she located the file while running on generator power during a power outage caused by the recent OK storms. That makes her pretty awesome in addition to being creative.

Updated PDF: Wedding Garter2013

Tatting patterns including original garter pattern: http://www.ginabea.com/tatting.php

I started the pattern in a size ten and realized that I wanted to use a smaller thread. So I turned it into a bookmark.

I followed Gina's suggested variation of removing one of the 4-1-4-4-1-4 rows to fit the elastic I had purchased. I used Lizbeth thread size 20 color 158 (Niagara Falls) thinking of "...something blue." The photo album in the background features my wedding cake which my sister-in-law made.

Weekly Challenge #6 – Remembrance Ring:

“Tie a string around your finger so you won’t forget.”

This week’s challenge pattern was designed by Marilee Rockley (Yarnplayer). She is a very talented designer and even hand dyes thread! She has happily let us use one of her free patterns for this challenge.

Remembrance ring pattern: http://yarnplayertats.blogspot.com/2009/11/remembrance-tatted-ring.html

This is a great pattern for a pretty ring made of tatted rings (and a few chains).

Weekly Challenge #6 – Yarnplayer’s Remembrance ring tatted by Natalie Rogers. Lizbeth thread size 20 color Jewels (113).

If you are up for an extra challenge try to work the ring continuously.  If you start on a chain, instead of the ring, you can end the first round with a split ring (just make sure you connect the starting and ending chains of round 1 together before you work the split ring). Then you begin round 2 with a split ring and continue around as the pattern instructs. This is what I did, because I wanted the fewest amount of tails to sew in at the end.

Weekly Challenge #4 – 5 Point Celtic Motif:

This week’s challenge pattern was designed by Sue Hanson.  According to Sue, this design has been made into Easter eggs, broaches, earrings, centers of crosses, decorated prayer caps, handbags, and more.  I can’t wait to see what you do with it.

http://freespace.virgin.net/bo.hanson/Tatting/Celtic5PointMotif/Celtic5PointMotif.html

This was my first foray into Celtic patterns and I love it.  The pattern was easy to follow and the pictures of the individual rounds proved helpful.  I’ve turned the one I tatted into a necklace pendant.  I hope you have as much fun with this pattern as I did.  Thank you Sue Hanson for sharing your pattern and letting us use it!
