Weekly Challenge #47 – Poppy Ice Drop

This week’s pattern is by the talented Helen Walters. It is an ice drop poppy and her first pattern. It was inspired by the tiny heart poppy pattern by Muskaan.

I love seeing poppy flowers bloom every Spring. They were a surprise across my backyard when we first moved into our house and I look forward to them every year.

As a symbol, the poppy serves as a reminder of those who fought and died in war. This symbolism was inspired be the WWI poem “In Flanders Fields” by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. The poppy is often worn on November 11th [Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, Veterans Day] to commemorate military personnel who have died in war.

Her pattern is shared here with permission:

Weekly Challenge #45 – Cheeky Monkey

This week’s pattern is by the talented Nicola Bowersox. It is a playfully Cheeky Monkey.

It made my day when she shared it in the Tatting Facebook group. I immediately saved the pattern with the plan of tatting it for my brother on his birthday. Green was his favorite color, so my monkey has green eyes. He’s such a happy little guy!

Her pattern can be found at the following:

MikeyMonkey

Cheeky Monkey Pattern by Nicola Bowersox. Tatted by Natalie Rogers in memory of Mikey.

This monkey pattern is adorable and I had a lot of fun tatting it up. I tatted my monkey in Liz Metallic Mocha Brown and Christmas Green – size 20. Using other thread types may require blocking/stiffening as a final touch for your “Cheeky Monkey”. I look forward to seeing a barrel full of monkeys as you complete yours!

Wednesday Weekly Challenge #33 Sugar Maple Leaf

Welcome back to the Wednesday Weekly Challenge. Each Wednesday we will be posting a link to a free pattern and challenging you, the reader, to try it. Weekly Challenge #33 Canadian Sugar Maple Leaf
This week’s pattern is from Gail Marshal. She has posted both a written pattern and a diagram on her NATA site. NATA stands for Nuts About Tatting Association. You can find more information about NATA by following the link.
I found this pattern while looking for something to make with my new threads I got last month (New Threads for Mama) and the Lizbeth Spice Cake is still on the list but the ones I am making now are for the helpful gals at the Kid’s Doctor’s office and need to be green. The lighter one is is Lizbeth 138, Leafy Green and the dark on is Lizbeth 167, Jungle Greens. I extended the stems in order to make them into bookmarks and finished them off by tatting a small motif to finish them off. They still need to be blocked but that is for another day.
This pattern works up pretty quick, each portion is a count repeat so you don’t have to continually watch the pattern.
I hope you enjoy working these up, I can’t wait to see your pictures.
Happy Holidays
Davina-Marie

Wednesday Weekly Challenge #32 Tatted Roman Cross

20131204-142811.jpg

Wednesday Weekly Challenge #32 Tatted Roman Cross

Last month, Shuttlebirds discussed making some tatted crosses for the congregation of the church we meet at as a thank you for allowing us to use their facility. I looked around but didn’t find a pattern that fit the idea I had in mind so I started working one out in my head. I wanted the pattern to start at the base so I could easily turn it into bookmark but I also wanted an optional ring at the top so I could make it into a pendant in smaller sized threads.
You will need a pretty full shuttle for the center color, I ran out twice while making the final sample, the second time on the last ring. As you can see in the picture, I just did the shoelace trick and did the final ring in the exterior color.
This is a great pattern to work on the go, the chains are almost all the same and the ring counts are relatively easy to remember.
Also, I tried to put the whole thing on a one page PDF to make it easier to keep a copy; Tatted Roman Cross. If you like or hate it, please let me know.
I hope you have a great time, and I would love to see pictures.
Davina-Marie
