Wednesday’s Weekly Challenge #44 – Painted Lady Butterfly

Welcome back to the Wednesday Weekly Challenge.  Each Wednesday we will be posting a tatting related challenge (usually in the form of a free tatting pattern link) and challenging you, the reader, to try it.  When a pattern link is provided, we will also post a picture of how our tatting turned out when we followed the pattern. Following the challenge, we will feature reader completions of past challenges. So submit your completed work whether it be from challenge #1, 29, or the current challenge. All submissions will be posted in the next week’s challenge.

Challenge Issued: Follow the linked pattern in any color combinations and thread sizes you choose.  [Variations of the pattern are welcome and encouraged.]  Then snap a picture and send it to sbspokane@yahoo.com with the subject line “Weekly Challenge” (or post it in the comments) to see your completed work featured as part of next week’s challenge post. Be sure to include the name you wish us to list with your photo – we want to give you credit! [There is no time limit on sending in your picture – feel free to send in any weekly challenge pictures (from last week or weeks/months ago) and we will feature them as part of the next Wednesday’s post.]

Weekly Challenge #44 – Painted Lady Butterfly (No Beads)

This week’s pattern is by the talented Jane Eborall. It is her beautiful painted lady butterfly.

This pattern will give you some practice with split rings and I really like how the crocheted antennae look.

Drive-By Wednesday Challenge #41

This is just a quick challenge, I didn’t want another week to go by without one but since it took me till 15 minutes ago to realize why I couldn’t get my pics transferred I don’t have time for something long.
I started this before workshop, to mark my scissors but it just didn’t get done in time. But from now on, no one will be touching my good scissors, or they lose a finger (Evil Laugh escaping)
The pattern is by Kathy Lowe and includes instructions for 5 & 7 character names. Since Davina is only 6 letters, I added a heart to the end. The beads can be purchased in the kids craft department at just about any store. Make sure you use the smaller beads or they won’t fit.
I used an old cell phone clip that I modified to attach the piece to my scissors. I also edited some of the rings and added a tassel because I love tassels.
The pattern can be found here NamePlate
And as always, we wanna see what you make! Even if it is from one of our first challenges, we want to see it so we can show everyone else.

I tatted mine in two colors. My tension was a bit on the tight side and it is not wanting to lay completely flat, but I love how it turned out. It’s a perfect thing to tat with Valentine’s Day approaching. Enjoy a heart and rose for yourself or share it with a loved one.

P.S. Sorry for the long absence. My computer is acting up (using hubby’s laptop). I took on new responsibilities at my newer job (hooray for teaching a few classes in addition to tutoring!). My husband sent me on a trip to see my sister and enjoy a weekend of fantastically geeky music (I even had the opportunity to perform on stage – singing and playing my guitar!). I think I am finally getting a handle on the new schedule – so you should hear back from me on a regular basis and in the future, I promise to give warning before disappearing for so long.  Happy Tatting!

I was trying to figure out what to tat as the first challenge of 2014. I went back and forth between snowflakes, various animals, and all sorts of amazing designs by many different designers. Finally, I decided that music was the way to go. I love celebrating with music! Music plays a big role in both my memories and how I prepare for things to come. So I hope you enjoy a New Year full of music, laughter, and loved ones!

Happy New Year!

I’m currently on a snowflake kick for my tree and this one is a lot of fun! However, I’ve miscalculated the amount of time it takes me to add beads to a picot before a join. Thus, you get to enjoy an in-progress shot. I will upload my completed snowflake when it is finished and I look forward to seeing yours!

Weekly Challenge #33 Canadian Sugar Maple Leaf
This week’s pattern is from Gail Marshal. She has posted both a written pattern and a diagram on her NATA site. NATA stands for Nuts About Tatting Association. You can find more information about NATA by following the link.
I found this pattern while looking for something to make with my new threads I got last month (New Threads for Mama) and the Lizbeth Spice Cake is still on the list but the ones I am making now are for the helpful gals at the Kid’s Doctor’s office and need to be green. The lighter one is is Lizbeth 138, Leafy Green and the dark on is Lizbeth 167, Jungle Greens. I extended the stems in order to make them into bookmarks and finished them off by tatting a small motif to finish them off. They still need to be blocked but that is for another day.
This pattern works up pretty quick, each portion is a count repeat so you don’t have to continually watch the pattern.
I hope you enjoy working these up, I can’t wait to see your pictures.
Happy Holidays
Davina-Marie
