Weekly Challenge #7 – Wedding Garter

“Something old,
Something new,
Something borrowed,
Something blue.”

This week’s pattern is provided by Gina Butler. Gina was sweet enough to find an updated version of her pattern for us to use… and if that isn’t awesome enough, she located the file while running on generator power during a power outage caused by the recent OK storms. That makes her pretty awesome in addition to being creative.

Updated PDF: Wedding Garter2013

Tatting patterns including original garter pattern: http://www.ginabea.com/tatting.php

I started the pattern in a size ten and realized that I wanted to use a smaller thread. So I turned it into a bookmark.

I followed Gina's suggested variation of removing one of the 4-1-4-4-1-4 rows to fit the elastic I had purchased. I used Lizbeth thread size 20 color 158 (Niagara Falls) thinking of "...something blue." The photo album in the background features my wedding cake which my sister-in-law made.

I look forward to seeing what you create with Gina’s pattern. It has potential to be turned into so many things (bracelet, anklet, necklace, bookmarks, etc.) in addition to the beautiful garter it already is.

Weekly Challenge #6 – Remembrance Ring:

“Tie a string around your finger so you won’t forget.”

This week’s challenge pattern was designed by Marilee Rockley (Yarnplayer). She is a very talented designer and even hand dyes thread! She has happily let us use one of her free patterns for this challenge.

Remembrance ring pattern: http://yarnplayertats.blogspot.com/2009/11/remembrance-tatted-ring.html

This is a great pattern for a pretty ring made of tatted rings (and a few chains).

If you are up for an extra challenge try to work the ring continuously.  If you start on a chain, instead of the ring, you can end the first round with a split ring (just make sure you connect the starting and ending chains of round 1 together before you work the split ring). Then you begin round 2 with a split ring and continue around as the pattern instructs. This is what I did, because I wanted the fewest amount of tails to sew in at the end.
