Playing Catch Up With TIAS

So between vacation, fighting a cold, work, the weekly challenge, and Fall Lace Day – it took me a while to catch up on the TIAS. However, I am finally caught up. I completed days two through seven yesterday. I hope to stay caught up now as well.  I really have no idea what it is going to be.

I’m loving the mystery. It’s exciting tatting a few bits at a time and wondering what it is we are making.

Want to join in? Sherry Pence posts the patterns on her blog: http://ladyshuttlemaker.blogspot.com/

Want to see the work of other participants? Check out the Fall TIAS Community Blog: http://tiaspence.blogspot.com/

Are you participating in the TIAS? Do you think you know what it is? Leave a comment and let me know.

Happy Tatting!

~Natalie

TIAS – Day One

You can find the pattern for day one on Sherry’s blog (this is where she will be posting all pattern bits so that they do not get lost in the community blog): http://ladyshuttlemaker.blogspot.com/2013/09/tias-day-one.html

You can see the tatting progress of several participants (70+ have signed up to post) here: http://tiaspence.blogspot.com/

Today’s pattern bit was very straight forward. The most challenging part for me in this section was the measured mock picot. It took me a few tries to figure out how to hold my gauge and get the distance right. I don’t normally tat with picot gauges – so that may take some getting used to. The only thing I’m not happy with is that the first picot twisted – I’m hoping there is a join to that picot later on that will correct that issue. I don’t have any guesses yet as to what the finished pattern might be.

~Natalie

P.S. Jane Eborall already knows what it is… *giggles*

EDIT:

So I definitely made 1/2″ picots yesterday, using my picot gauge vertically. So with Sherry’s announcement this morning that the picots should be 1/4″, I had a bit of fun retro tatting. Each time I practice taking out a ring it seems to get easier. I managed to undo all of yesterday’s work so that I could re-tat Day One. So here it is, in all it’s 1/4″ picot-y goodness.

Wednesday’s Weekly Challenge #15 – Tat It And See 2013

WARNING!!!! Natalie is out this week, tatting away like crazy so I am in charge of this week’s Challenge.
 My apologies in advance.

Welcome back to the Wednesday Weekly Challenge.  Each Wednesday we will be posting a link to a free pattern and challenging you, the reader, to try it.  In addition to the pattern link, we will post a picture of how our tatting turned out when we followed the pattern. Following the challenge, we will feature reader completions of past challenges.

Challenge Issued: Follow the linked pattern in any color combinations and thread sizes you choose.  [Variations of the pattern are welcome and encouraged.]  Then snap a picture and send it to sbspokane@yahoo.com with the subject line “Weekly Challenge” to see your completed work featured as part of next week’s challenge post. Be sure to include the name you wish us to list with your photo – we want to give you credit! [There is no time limit on sending in your picture – feel free to send in any weekly challenge pictures (from last week or weeks/months ago) and we will feature them as part of the next Wednesday’s post.]

Weekly Challenge #15 -Surprise! Jane Eborall Tat it and See 2013

This week’s pattern is from Jane Eborall and is one of her yearly Tat it and See. The idea behind it is that you don’t know what you are making until you get to the end, unless you figure it out sooner. I did this earlier in the year and it was a lot of fun, especially when you are working with a magnificent pattern writer like Jane. The trick is NOT to look ahead. You will be tempted. You will think, just a little peek. Don’t, just do that day, Then move to the next. Since we are doing this late in the game, we do get the advantage of having all days available so we can work it all in one sitting if we wish. But work them in order, one at a time and enjoy the challenge.

In order to finish this before the nest Wednesday Challenge, I am going to do 2 days at a time. After a few days I will set up another post so we can post pictures as we follow along. Lets get this started.

You can find Jane Eborall at any of these locations:

Blog: http://www.janeeborall.blogspot.com/
Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/tattingjane/
Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/shop/janeeborall
Tatting Patterns: http://www.janeeborall.freeservers.com/

I warn you, clear your day before you head out to Jane’s blog. She has no much information and free patterns you will look up and find out your whole afternoon is lost. I know from experience. Enjoy.

Weekly Challenge #14 – Sweetheart Snowflake

This week’s pattern is a variation of Gina Butler’s Garter pattern. This variation was created by Natalie Rogers. It is shared here with Gina’s permission. The idea for a snowflake came to me as I was working through Gina’s lovely garter pattern. I had hoped to have it ready for you last week as a “Christmas in July” type post, but my computer did not cooperate with me. So here it is a week later. I hope you enjoy it!

I haven’t written up very many patterns – so please tell me if you find a mistake or have suggestions. Thanks!

Weekly Challenge #13 – Ringtrim – a Microdragon

This week’s pattern was designed by Anne Bruvold. Anne’s Flying Minor Norwegian Dragon was featured as Challenge #2. Anne created Ringtrim for tatters to practice their tatted rings. This pattern utilizes both single shuttle split rings and split rings. The wing also allows tatters to practice throwing a ring off of a split ring. If you choose to work in a single color you can get away with just split rings, but I encourage you to make him as directed at least once.

A special thanks to Shuttlebirds Guild Member, Denice Lewis, for bringing this cute pattern to my attention! You can see several dragons Denice tatted and shared at our last guild meeting in the reader submissions section below.

Weekly Challenge #10

This week’s pattern was my first accidental variation while following a pattern.  Accidents can be very pretty things. You are getting one of my patterns this week for a couple of reasons. One is that I have company in town (my awesome Mum-in-law and my Aussie grandmother, who is currently visiting the states) – so I’m a bit pressed for tatting time. Secondly, today is a day that I remember my forever 13 brother – I love and miss him lots. So hearts for everyone. Family is wonderful and I do hope that everyone is able to take some time to enjoy their family and friends.

Weekly Challenge #8 – Tatted Cameo Pendant

This week’s pattern was designed by the talented TotusMel. She has a great designer eye and it is a delight to follow her work.

Pattern: http://totusmel.blogspot.com/2010/03/free-tatted-cameo-pattern.html

I don’t feel that I quite did her pattern justice.  It is so pretty.  I think I need some more practice with such a large ring (80 ds). It was nice learning how to make Victorian sets. I look forward to trying some of her other patterns in the future! This is definitely a pattern I will do again once I’ve had a bit more practice with Victorian sets. I had started out with size 20 thread, but I couldn’t get my ring to close. So I switched to size three thread and that made closing the ring easier.
